Food-stamp tally nears 40 million, sets record
About 30 years ago, my late brother, in Ohio, said that he knew some of the people at the supermarket who used food stamps. He said they drove nice cars, smoked and visited the local pub frequently. There are a number of articles going around that cite the high end cell phone use of those receiving food assistance in schools. How much is fraud, no one knows.
What is chilling about this article is that 39.68 million or 1 in 8 people in the US are on SNAP, a fancy new acronym for food stamps, and that this number is expected to grow to 43.3 million next year.
My guess is that those adults in the 43.3 million are a lock for Obama in 2012.
Entitlements are destroying this country. The Democrats don't care, and the Republicans are afraid to do anything. Unless we get some statesmen like our founding fathers into office, we are doomed to become Greece. Read article here.
As an aside, if the stimulus plan is doing so well and the jobs are on the way, why does the USDA expect almost a 4 million increase in recipients next year?

There is alot of the same things going on as was when Dad, your late brother mentioned but so much more. When Dad was alive there was not as much selling, trading and misuse of food stamps as there is now. The card has helped but trading of the card is not questioned or the education of food stamp users on how to economically use their subsidies is not even done anymore. I can remember my Sophomore year in college having to learn how to feed a family of four with a balanced and healthy menu on the basic food stamp allotment in the 70's. Now why would they take the time to have a college student learn this at OSU unless there was a use for it? It is 10 weeks of knowledge that I have never gotten to use and makes me stay away from the lines in the grocery on the 1st and 15th of the month!
