The Rise of the Right

This Newsweek article, by Fareed Zakaria, a somewhat left of center liberal, acknowledges the movement to the right throughout Europe and the US. I believe he is mistaken in reading into the NY 23rd win by the Democrat as a repudiation of the Conservative position. As I read the results, adding the Conservative and Republican votes together, it is a Right of Center win. I believe many of the Republican voters did not know the circumstances and voted the Republican line, thus guaranteeing the Democrat the seat. If so, this does not make Zakaria's case that the Republicans should move to the center. Conservative fiscal policy and free market stances are still more attractive to Independents than left leaning socialism. Read the article here.
