Freedom of speech personified

This from PoweLine is a good reminder for Thanksgiving.

Bruce Cole is the president of the American Revolution Center at Valley Forge, the first museum and education center dedicated to teaching the story of the American Revolution. He is also the art historian who served as the pre-Obama worship chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. Last month the Wall Street Journal published his column "Freedom of speech personfied" on Norman Rockwell's series of paintings on Roosevelt's Four Freedoms. Cole judged Rockwell's depiction of Freedom of Speech to be of genuine merit:

In "Freedom of Speech,"...Rockwell found a subject that is active and public, a subject he could grasp and shape into his greatest painting forging traditional American illustration into a powerful and enduring work of art.

For inspiration, he thought of the New England town-hall meetings he knew so well, with their long tradition of democratic public debate--a tradition, as we have seen this summer, still very much alive. But we are not sure where Rockwell's scene occurs; a blackboard frames the speaker, but he stands behind a pew: school and church, two pillars of American life. The pamphlet held by the man closest to us reveals the subject of the meeting--a discussion of the town's annual report.

Using a classic pyramidal composition, Rockwell focuses attention on the standing speaker whose age, worn and stained jacket, rough hands with dirty fingernails, and plaid shirt set him apart from the neat coats, ties and white shirts of the older men in the audience. Although he is a working man, this figure, his face reminiscent of Lincoln's, is unafraid to voice his opinion--which we suspect is contrary to that of the others in the room. Standing tall, his mouth open, his shining eyes transfixed, he speaks his mind, untrammeled and unafraid. In Rockwell's vision he has become not only an active public participant in democracy, but a defender of it. He is the very embodiment of free speech, a living manifestation of that abstract right--an image that transforms principle, paint and, yes, creed, into an indelible image and a brilliant and beloved American icon still capable of inspiring millions world-wide.

The painting reminds us of much we have to be grateful for on this Thanksgiving.

I read your post on Rockwell's Four Freedoms, and Freedom of Speech in particular, and wanted to fill in a few blanks about where (and who) Rockwell painted.

Rockwell lived in Arlington, Vermont from 1938 to 1953 and during that time, he used local residents for his models -- many of whom are still alive here to tell their stories! The man in the Freedom of Speech painting was Carl Hess, who owned the local one pump gas station. The scene was from a meeting at the town hall.

My husband and I own Rockwell's Arlington home which is now a B & B -- and the art studio that he built when he lived here is still standing and is part of our rental property.

Also, if you are interested in seeing the original Four Freedoms, you must visit the Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA where there are over 500 of his original paintings. The Four Freedoms are displayed in their own room and it is truly moving to see the "real" things rather than prints.

It is a time honored tradition for the Democrat Party to deal in character assassination in order to prevent conservative opponents from gaining traction. The SEIU reaction, "Nick Balzano, President of the local Service Employees International Union (SEIU) threatened the Allentown City Council with legal action for allowing the Boy Scouts to clear the trail. Balzano complained that the city had recently laid off 39 SEUI workers. As a result, Balzano told the City Council that the union would be “looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails,” adding, “There’s to be no volunteers.”

DeMint Pushes 'Term Limits for All'

My previous article talked about bribery and selling out on the health care bill. The only way to mitigate the problem is to have term limits for all legislators. Jim DeMint has proposed it, but if there is not a groundswell for ratification, nothing will come of his legislation. As the Washington Times article states, "fat chance" getting the 2/3 of Congress to vote for it to get it to a vote at the State level.

This is something we have to push hard on.

When you read this article, in the Washington Post,fancy that, you see, what I call corruption in our legislative process. Hannity had an ex-republican governor on his program last evening talking about this vote purchase, and he stated, matter of factly, that this is common in the way legislation gets passed. In other words, if the bill does not warrant a yes vote on its merits, it gets passed by bribing the corrupt legislators. Whether it is for her constituents, or state coffers, it is a bribe that Mary Landrieu is taking, and a bill she has problems with will be passed because of her. Where are the ethics in that?

Staffers on Capitol Hill were calling it the Louisiana Purchase.

On the eve of Saturday's showdown in the Senate over health-care reform, Democratic leaders still hadn't secured the support of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), one of the 60 votes needed to keep the legislation alive. The wavering lawmaker was offered a sweetener: at least $100 million in extra federal money for her home state.

And so it came to pass that Landrieu walked onto the Senate floor midafternoon Saturday to announce her aye vote -- and to trumpet the financial "fix" she had arranged for Louisiana. "I am not going to be defensive," she declared. "And it's not a $100 million fix. It's a $300 million fix."

I would call it a $100 million or $300 million bribe paid for by the taxpayers.

Why Can't Workers Understand? Unions Are The Problem!

The above jobless chart shows the divergence between Detroit, heavily unionized and supported by the free economy and Washington DC, heavily unionized with no competition and supported by the taxpayer.

I reference two articles, one about a Kia plant in Alabama and the other about Boeing moving a major aircraft plant from Everett, Washington to Charleston, SC. What is the common thread? Unions. Detroit has lost thousands of jobs due to union demands and threats of strikes that forced auto company executives to capitulate to demands, the cost of which could never be covered. The auto industry was forced to leave Detroit and environs for greener pastures down South. In addition, since the government takeover, you the taxpayers are on the hook for the accrued and unpaid benefits.

We can also point to other industries and towns like Fall River, Mass. for textiles and shoes, and Pittsburgh for steel (although making a nice recovery after their unions saw the writing on the wall).

Towns in Alabama are reveling in the upsurge in jobs created in non-unionized Kia plants and Hyundai parts manufacturers.

Charleston, SC has just won bids for a new non-unionized Boeing plant to produce its new 787 Dreamliner, which Everett, Washington so desperately wanted. For decades the northwest has been the hub of aircraft manufacturing, why now the change? The production of the Dreamliner is two years behind schedule due, in part, by crippling strikes by the union machinists. Boeing is willing the spend a $Billion to build a plant and train new workers to remove themselves from the high cost and crippling strikes caused by unions. This is the only way a company can survive.

Do the non-union workers have any animosity toward their new employers? No, they appreciate the good paying jobs and benefits a well run profitable company can give its workers.

The only growing unions today are those supported by the government and you the taxpayer and that is due to the lack of necessity, no need to do a good job, no need to care, and no need to worry about where the money is coming from.

Political Correctness Or Something Else?

Newt posted a request for another term to be used in instances where the term "political correctness" may be too mild, as when inaction results in significant harm. One of the respondents wrote the response below that, I believe, gets to the point of what is happening in the minds of liberal/progressives today.

Mr. Speaker-

I'm for Unconditional Tolerance recommended by my fellow citizen layopinions yesterday.

Unconditional Tolerance describes the results of what Thomas Sowell outlines in his book "A Conflict of Visions". Sowell identifies for us a group of people for whom good intentions and sincerity are more important than outcomes and results. For these people, no amount of negative results is sufficient to abandon actions whose intentions that are good, as promoted by enlightened and sincere people.

Unfortunately, for these progressive minded citizens among us, the loss of 12 souls in the terrorist act at Fort Hood will be viewed as aberration, and will by no means the fault of the sincere efforts of diversity and tolerance. What is heart breaking is that the thoughts and desires progressive and liberal continue to be acted out, we have lost the thoughts, opinions and actions of 12 citizens. For these citizens and their families, the terrorism at Fort Hood is real, painful and permanent. For these people their lives will forever be changed, not so, I fear, for progressive liberals.

We already see the next step of unconditional tolerance in the decision to have terrorists tried in New York City. Here too, intentions and sincerity are first, if it were not the case, why not Fargo or Fresno? No, this is about making a point with world wide exposure. This is a shamefully transparent prosecution of the actions prior administration in protecting its citizens. Like the guy at your work or school, always eager to throw someone “under the buss”, in order to save, protect or perhaps enhance themselves. This is about "I'm right and you're wrong"; this is about Obama, his vision of himself and that of his reality, and not at all about the reality in which you and I must live.

In our reality words have meaning, bullets penetrate and wound people, and too many of those people die. In our reality people who inflect great harm on others for the sake of their ideals, are called terrorists. Terrorists do what they do because their reality is different than ours, and they want us to abandon ours and abide by theirs. These people are not influenced by reason, good intentions or sincerity of others, they just know their "reality", their sincerity and vision for the world around them; they are fundamentally and unapologetically intolerant.

In this, terrorists are not so foreign to the desires of progressive liberals. Not that progressives or liberals approve of terrorism, they certainly do not, but they understand it because it is within the penumbra of what they deem sometimes necessary. Being so convinced by their own "enlightened" the progressives among us are confident that the ends justify the means; outcomes are independent of the process by which they were achieved. This is why an act that is so clearly and obviously terrorist in nature, intent and execution, is less clear to liberals. They are reticent of the label “terrorism” because they understand. You can see the con-trail of this sensibility through the “if all else fails, force it” approach of the democratic congress on the healthcare bill. Motivated by sincerity of their own good intentions, they believe that force is occasionally necessary to achieve their desired outcomes, and herein lays an underlying sensitivity to those who are similarly motivated.

By way of remedy, may I recommend Intolerable Ambivalence? Perhaps I and others can refuse to remain ambivalent to what people say, even when it is very well said. Perhaps it is OK to call the President a "liar" when he is indeed lying even though it is not OK to call what happened at Fort Hood a terrorist act.

It is time to call'em as we see'em.

I believe he is mistaken in reading into the NY 23rd win by the Democrat as a repudiation of the Conservative position. As I read the results, adding the Conservative and Republican votes together, it is a Right of Center win. I believe many of the Republican voters did not know the circumstances and voted the Republican line, thus guaranteeing the Democrat the seat. If so, this does not make Zakaria's case that the Republicans should move to the center. Let the government run the schools, and it may end up teaching your children values that offend you. An article by Brent Bozell A Stomachache for Our Sponsor reminds me of a small irritation created by TV producers/directors/writers in their almost daily skits promoting a political ideology which is almost always the far left agenda. This brings to mind a recent episode of Law & Order where the prosecution of President Bush was being espoused.

Sponsors have a right to know what their money is to promote and, if they want their product to appeal to the masses, then the programming should fit that end. People also have the right to change channels if a particular program is offensive, sexually, politically or for any other reason, as I have done with Law & Order which, to me, has become politically offensive.

If more people used the remote to vote for programs that do not cross the sexual and political lines, then the sponsors would have to be more selective in their programming choices.

This is not censorship, it is just a way of telling Hollywood that we don't want to be bombarded with a political speech every time we want to watch a good sitcom or crime program.

Unemployment Hits 10.2%

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released their report today showing an increase in unemployment from 9.8% to 10.2% for the month of October. This increase appears to be across the board except for Health Care workers. Since construction and manufacturing jobs are still dropping, I guess we can safely say the $900 billion emergency stimulus package is not working, but fret not, only $200 billion of the "EMERGENCY FUNDS" have been spent on worthless, non-job producing projects.
